Optimum protection for your face

A high-quality motorcycle balaclava in combination with a motorcycle helmet that fits properly offers you the best possible protection while riding. Balaclavas offer a range of different functions to this end. The most important advantages are listed below:

  • Wind protection: A balaclava protects your face and your neck from cold wind blast. This is especially important at high speeds and in cold weather.
  • Absorption of sweat: A balaclava prevents sweat from getting into your helmet. This increases comfort and improves hygiene.
  • Protection against dirt: A balaclava provides protection against dirt, dust and insects, so you can enjoy your ride in peace.
  • Protection against cold temperatures: Having the right balaclava gives you the peace of mind that you have what you need to stay warm and comfortable – even during long tours in fall and winter.
  • Increased helmet life: Wearing a balaclava protects your helmet from getting dirty and slows down the rate of wear and tear.

Materials Used for Motorcycle Balaclavas

Motorcycle balaclavas are made from various materials, with each material offering specific benefits for riders:

  • Cotton is a natural material that is soft and breathable – which makes it perfect for moderate temperatures and short rides. Balaclavas made of silk are lightweight, comfortable, and they also do an excellent job at keeping you warm.
  • Merino wool offers maximum warmth – even in wet conditions. Balaclavas made of this material are also soft and comfortable. Perfect for cold weather.
  • Polyester and other synthetic fibers are lightweight, breathable and quick-drying. These materials are suitable for both sweat-inducing summer rides and winter tours.
  • Balaclavas with WINDSTOPPER® material by GoreTex Labs are windproof, breathable and provide effective protection against wind chill.
  • Balaclavas made of neoprene provide outstanding protection against wind and weather and are particularly well suited to extreme conditions.
  • Balaclavas with a microfleece facing are soft, offer good thermal insulation and rapidly wick away perspiration. Balaclavas and neck collars made with microfleece offer a high level of comfort and warmth on cold days.

FAQ about motorcycle balaclavas

What different types of motorcycle balaclavas are there?

Motorcycle balaclavas come in a range of different designs, with each design offering specific advantages:

  • Classic balaclavas cover the entire head, neck and face, leaving only the eyes exposed. This style of balaclava provides all-round sweat absorption in the helmet and offers maximum protection against the cold in cooler temperatures.
  • Half-face balaclavas, neck tubes or multifunctional headwear only cover the lower part of the face and the neck. As the name suggests, multifunctional headwear can be worn in different ways, e.g., as a neck warmer, as a hairband or as a headscarf.

If needed, you can expand the protection your balaclava offers you or select an alternative to a balaclava. Some options include:

  • Neck warmers or neck collars: These options cover your neck and sometimes also the lower part of your face. They are an ideal choice when you are looking to add an extra layer of comfort and protection.
  • Scarves and headwear: These options are flexible and versatile and offer a base layer of protection against wind and dust. They offer a good alternative to a classic balaclava, especially for higher temperatures and short journeys.

Which types of balaclava are suitable for winter?

Balaclavas made of insulating and windproof materials are ideal for winter. Balaclavas made of merino wool offer exceptional temperature regulation and comfort. They also keep you warm and wick away moisture at the same time. WINDSTOPPER® balaclavas have been specially developed to shield you from wind chill and provide maximum protection. This material provides effective protection against wind and cold weather conditions. Neoprene balaclavas are also particularly windproof and water repellent – which makes them perfect for extreme conditions. Microfleece balaclavas are soft and warm. This makes them the perfect choice for cold days.

Which types of motorcycle balaclava are suitable for summer?

When riding in summer, balaclavas made from lightweight and breathable materials are your best choice. Cotton is ideal when riding in high temperatures. It is comfortable and great at absorbing sweat. Balaclavas made of silk are also tailor-made for tours on warm summer days. Silk only absorbs a small amount of moisture and has a cooling effect on the skin. Balaclavas made of polyester and other synthetic fibers dry quickly and are airy enough to prevent overheating. They efficiently wick away moisture and keep your face and neck comfortably dry.

How do I properly maintain and care for a motorcycle balaclava?

By carrying out the proper care and maintenance, you can ensure that your balaclava lasts for a long time and retains its protective properties. The proper care and maintenance depends on the material your balaclava is made from:

  • Cotton: Balaclavas made of cotton can be machine-washed, ideally at a low temperature and using a mild detergent. You should let balaclavas made of cotton air-dry to keep the material at its best.
  • Silk: A balaclava made of silk should ideally be washed by hand. To do this, use lukewarm water with a maximum temperature of 30 C and a mild detergent that is suitable for washing silk.
  • Merino wool: For balaclavas made of this material, we recommend washing by hand or in the washing machine using the wool wash cycle with a detergent designed specifically for wool. Lay your balaclava flat and allow it to air-dry. This helps to ensure that the balaclava retains its shape after washing.
  • Polyester and other synthetic fibers: Balaclavas made of synthetic materials can be cleaned in the washing machine at a low temperature. These types of balaclavas generally dry very quickly. Ideally, they should be left to air-dry. Alternatively, you can also dry them in the dryer at a low heat.
  • WINDSTOPPER® and neoprene: Balaclavas made from these materials should ideally be washed by hand and using a mild detergent. After washing, you should not wring out your balaclava. Instead, you should hang it up and allow it to air-dry.
