The ideal combination of driving pleasure and freedom

Jet helmets for scooters or motorcycles cover half of your head and leave your face uncovered. This is why they are also referred to as half-shell helmets. Due to their special design, they are very popular with many motorcycle riders. This is because they offer a special riding experience that is mainly characterized by a high level of comfort and a unique sense of freedom. We have put together a summary of the benefits and advantages of a jet helmet for you below:

  • Retro design: The design of jet helmets reminds many riders of old films and times gone by. Therefore, these motorcycle helmets are also particularly popular among retro fans.
  • Easy to put on and take off: Since the rider’s face is not fully covered by the helmet, jet helmets are easier to put on and take off than full-face helmets, for example. Another advantage is the fact that you don’t have to take your helmet off to drink.
  • Low weight: Jet helmets are made of less material than full-face helmets. This means that they are also lighter in weight. Many riders appreciate this, since a heavy helmet can contribute to fatigue on long journeys.
  • Free field of vision: Other types of helmets, such as flip-up helmets, restrict the field of vision of the rider slightly. A jet helmet does not do this. Furthermore, others also have a better view of your face, which makes it easier to communicate during short breaks.

Jet helmets with Bluetooth are a particularly innovative option. In this case, the helmet has an integrated communication system that allows you to speak with or call other drivers while on the road. You can also listen to music or instructions from navigation devices using these types of helmets.

Safety features of jet helmets

Jet helmets cover the top, side and back of your head. Thanks to this design, they offer a good level of protection for your head when riding your motorcycle. Only the lower part of your face is left uncovered.

When purchasing a jet helmet, you should always look for a model with an ECE sticker (Europe) or a DOT sticker (USA). This guarantees that the helmet has been produced in accordance with the highest safety standards. However, some half-shell helmets also have a range of additional safety features: This includes, for example, quick-release systems, which are also referred to as emergency release systems. These systems consist of removable cheek pads that make it easier to remove the helmet in the event of an emergency.

You can also find jet helmets with a visor and jet helmets with a sun visor. These features improve visibility and also protect your face from adverse weather conditions and foreign objects.

Tip: Are you looking for a helmet that covers and protects your entire head, including your chin? Then take a look at our range of full-face helmets.

FAQ about motorcycle jet helmets

Which materials are used for jet helmets?

The outer shell of motorcycle helmets is usually made from thermoplastics, such as polycarbonate, fiberglass, composite materials or carbon fiber. These materials are all very robust and offer impressive impact resistance. They are also very light in weight.

Most helmets are manufactured with an outer shell made of polycarbonate because this material is well suited to mass production. This is why thermoplastic helmets are slightly less expensive than helmets made of other materials. However, thermoplastic helmets also degrade more quickly than helmets made from other materials because they are less resistant to environmental influences such as UV radiation.

The liner of the helmet is made of expanded polystyrene. The liner is crucial for impact absorption. Anti-bacterial and temperature-regulating materials are often used for the padding. This is a particularly important feature for rider comfort, since it would quickly become too warm under the helmet if temperature-regulating materials were not used.

Which properties should you look out for when purchasing a jet helmet?

When purchasing a jet helmet, the first thing you should look out for is the sticker showing that the helmet is certified according to the safety standards mentioned above. If the helmet has the relevant certification, then the three most important factors after this are:

  • The fit: To provide maximum protection, your helmet must be the right size. You can find your helmet size by measuring your head circumference and comparing the result with the manufacturer’s size table. When you wear a jet helmet, you must only be able to fit a maximum of two fingers between the helmet and your forehead.
  • Weight: A helmet that is too heavy can negatively impact your riding experience and make you fatigue more quickly. That is why you should make sure that you choose a helmet with a weight that feels comfortable even when worn for longer periods.
  • Comfort: The padding of the helmet should feel comfortable. A helmet does need to fit snugly, but it should not give you a headache. If you wear glasses, you should also make sure that the helmet is comfortable when wearing your glasses.

Additional features such as sun visors, visors and integrated communication systems are not essential for a jet helmet. However, these features could still make your motorcycle rides much more comfortable and pleasant. Therefore, you should first have a good look through our range of helmets and then decide which features would be useful for you personally.

How long can a jet helmet be used before it needs to be replaced?

Motorcycle helmets should always be replaced as soon as they have been damaged. This is the point when you definitely need a new helmet. However, even if your jet helmet remains completely undamaged, you still need to replace it at some point.

The general recommendation is to replace your helmet every five to seven years. This is due to the fact that some of the components responsible for protecting your head degrade over time. For example, the liner of the helmet can harden, which causes it to lose its shock-absorbing properties. In addition, helmets can loosen over time and this can lead to them no longer fitting perfectly.

What is the difference between a jet helmet and a braincap?

The braincap is a half-shell helmet and is particularly popular among retro fans. In Germany, the braincap helmet is not approved for use on public roads.

Exception: “An exception is only permissible when the vehicle is equipped with an approved restraint system (safety belt) and when the rider wears this restraint system.” (Quote from the German Catalogue of Penalty Points)
